Hoods, Covers and Helmets

Gutter hoods, covers, and helmets are secondary gutter parts that are installed above existing or new open gutters. The majority are not seamless and come in only 3 ft. or 6 ft. lengths, causing sag and leaks at jointed areas.

These gutters are designed as two pieces and are attached either over or under shingles by piercing roof decking and roof felt. Often this method invalidates roof warranties and can also lead to leaks and other costly water damage.

Gutter Screens and Mesh Toppers

Gutter screens and mesh toppers are inexpensive and readily available at hardware stores. However, they are tedious to install, marginally effective, don’t last very long, and they won’t keep you off ladders! You will still need to clean debris from the top of gutter screens.

Although they are somewhat effective against leaves, they do little to keep pine needles and other small debris out. Many gutter screens and mesh toppers are not very durable and can blow away or separate from the gutters in high winds.

A two-piece gutter system is not seamless, which can cause leaks to frequently occur. A two-piece system usually consists of a seamless open gutter bottom that channels the water and a separate gutter cover that is attached to the roof and hangs over the gutter.

Debris and leaves that do not slide over the gutter cover can become trapped, causing build-up and clogs. Plus, two-piece gutter guards can detach in high winds, and their design makes them vulnerable to damage from ladders and tree limbs.
